Missouri AG faces criticism for dropping out of gambling lawsuit against highway patrol

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 21:50:46 GMT

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey’s decision to withdraw from a lawsuit against the state highway patrol has earned a sharp rebuke from his potential 2024 rivals, with candidates from both parties demanding he return campaign donations connected to companies suing the state.Bailey cited an unspecified conflict of interest for not being able to defend the Missouri State Highway Patrol in a lawsuit filed nearly two years before he took office by companies accused of operating illegal gambling devices — Torch Electronics and Warrenton Oil. The state will now be defended by private counsel. The attorney general’s decision quickly drew criticism over the fact that his campaign has received thousands in contributions in recent months from political action committees connected to the chief lobbyist for both companies.  “It is ridiculous that taxpayer dollars will now have to be spent on hiring private lawyers to defend the public interest in this litigation becaus...

Father time is encroaching on the Avalanche’s roster as an early offseason begins.Four players at least 35 years old were on expiring contracts this season. Whether Colorado wants to bring back any of those depth veterans will be central to how the organization plans to retool around its young core. There’s also the matter of whether those players want to keep going. After a 2-1 Game 7 loss to the Seattle Kraken, an emotional Erik Johnson didn’t know Sunday night if he had just stepped off the ice for the final time in an Avalanche jersey.“I haven’t really thought about it at all,” Colorado’s longest-tenured player told reporters. “… It’s sad because you put in so much work, and ultimately we did accomplish our goal here (of winning a Stanley Cup). But you don’t want to go out like this. Whether it’s the end of the road or not, I was just proud to play here for as long as I did. And just grateful for everything.&#...

The fate of property tax policy will likely be in the hands of Colorado voters this November as lawmakers and the governor try for long-term solutions to the state’s skyrocketing property values.Gov. Jared Polis and the members of the Democratic majorities in the state Senate and House of Representatives unveiled Monday a proposal that would chop $40,000 off the valuations that steer total property taxes owed, reduce the overall residential assessment rate and expand and enhance the senior homestead exemption, among other changes. In all, the owner of a $600,000 house who just saw their valuation increase by about 30% — the state average is 33% — would see their expected tax increase drop from about $834 next year to about $406, according to an analysis from the governor’s office. The spike in property valuations, which topped 60% in some pockets of the Front Range, set off alarms among some assessors in the Denver metro area last week.“As people get thei...
