EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — A 16-year-old killed two police officers in the hall of his apartment, then struggled with his mother over the firearm before shooting her and killing himself, authorities in western Canada said Friday.Edmonton police said the male suspect in Thursday’s shooting previously received a mental health complaint that involved police. He did not have a criminal record, police said. Authorities said the officers were called to a family fight but there was no indication that the call was high risk or dangerous or that the teen had a gun. “When the two officers arrived, they were met by a 55-year-old female complainant outside of the complex. The two officers then responded to the suite where she resided, along with her 73-year-old male partner and their 16-year-old son,” police said in a statement. “Immediately upon arriving at the suite, both constables were shot multiple times by the 16-year-old male, and were immediately incapacitated. The move comes a week after the tech-focused bank failed in a sudden collapse that set off fears of wider problems in the global banking system. The filing on Friday from SVB Financial Group was widely expected. Much of the company is now under the control of banking regulators. The bank was seized last week by the federal government. In other developments, the bank and two of its executives were targeted in a class action lawsuit that claims the company did not disclose the risks that future interest rate increases would have on its business.___Biden calls for tougher penalties for execs of failed banksWASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is calling on Congress to allow regulators to impose tougher penalties on the executives of failed banks, including clawing back compensation and making it easier to bar them from w...

MÖNCHENGLADBACH, Germany (AP) — Two goals from Marvin Ducksch salvaged a draw for Werder Bremen against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga on Friday and punished Gladbach for wasteful shooting.Gladbach was looking for a landmark 500th home win in Bundesliga history and on course after goals by Marcus Thuram and Florian Neuhaus. Ducksch twice leveled the score for an otherwise unthreatening Bremen team and could have won the game in stoppage time.Gladbach dominated the first half but failed to score off a series of chances. Thuram gave Gladbach the lead in the 48th minute by surging through the defense and powering the ball past goalkeeper Michael Zetterer, a late replacement for ill first-choice keeper Jiri Pavlenka.Thuram’s misses ended up as important as his goal, though. The French striker had two good chances saved by Zetterer and once missed the target when trying an audacious lofted backheel finish. Teammate Jonas Hofmann had a shot blocked by a defender after it...

No. 1 Gamecocks cruise past Norfolk State in March Madness

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — This wasn’t the NCAA Tournament debut South Carolina coach Dawn Staley hoped to see from her top-seeded Gamecocks. The final scored showed a 72-40 blowout over No. 16 seed Norfolk State (26-7) on Friday. Staley saw poor shooting early and a disjointed attack that could cost her team down the road. “If it wasn’t for the way we play defense, (Norfolk State) would’ve probably given us a lot of trouble given how we shot the ball,” Staley said. Zia Cooke scored 11 points as South Carolina moved five wins away from a perfect season. Aliyah Boston had seven points, nine rebounds and two blocks for the Gamecocks (33-0), who won their 39th straight game dating back to last year’s NCAA title run. They also moved to 11-0 in first-round games under Staley. Not that much of that mattered to the two-time national championship coach. She was so frustrated with her attack, she called an early timeout in the second quarter with her team ahead 24-12 — som...
