The emergency landing of a Boeing 737 Max jetliner with a gaping hole in its side and the airline’s decision to ground identical planes is renewing questions about the safety of Boeing’s best-selling plane — one that was involved in two deadly crashes.A window panel blew out on an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-9 Max seven minutes after takeoff from Portland, Oregon, on Friday. The rapid loss of cabin pressure pulled the clothes off a child and caused oxygen masks to drop from the ceiling, but miraculously none of the 174 passengers and six members were injured. Pilots made a safe emergency landing.Hours after the terrifying incident, Alaska Airlines announced that it would ground its entire fleet of 65 Max 9s for inspections and maintenance. CEO Ben Minicucci said Alaska expects the inspections to be completed “in the next few days.”Even a short grounding will pose significant problems for the airline and its passengers — the Max 9 accounts for more than one-fourth of Alaska’s fleet. Winter weather in Massachusetts sparks concerns for unaccompanied homeless adults

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 04:08:08 GMT

Advocates and shelter providers say bubbling just beyond the surface of the family shelter crisis this winter are concerns that unaccompanied homeless adults are not receiving enough resources as temperatures drop below freezing.Cold weather arrives as one provider told the Herald that they have seen more unaccompanied, unhoused adults seeking shelter compared to last year. It comes at a time when most of state government is focused on housing migrants arriving in Massachusetts.Single adults do not have a right to shelter in Massachusetts like families with children or pregnant people, which means unaccompanied adults do not have guaranteed access to temporary housing.Massachusetts Housing and Shelter Alliance CEO Joyce Tavon said member agencies across the state have reported shelters for adult individuals are largely full and “trying to figure out ways to add matts in their cafeteria, put people in chairs.”But in some communities, she said, “that’s just not doable” because provide...

Bruins notebook: Fourth line has yet to find identity

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 04:08:08 GMT

The Bruins as a whole are not a fully developed team so it stands to reason that their fourth line is the same, from how it needs to play to exactly which players are going to be on it.But creating a fourth line that can be reliable in important situations is very much on coach Jim Montgomery’s to-do list.“It is a concern, but it’s a work in progress and we knew all along this year that that was going to be a work in progress. It continues. We believe in the players that we have and we’re going to work with them and develop them until they have the game-in, game-out identity that we need,” said Montgomery. It can take a while for a fourth line to come together. The most identifiable fourth unit the B’s have had in recent memory was the fan favorite Merlot line of Shawn Thornton, Gregory Campbell and Daniel Paille, and that line didn’t become a regular cohesive unit until later in the 2010-11 Stanley Cup season. Montgomery ticked off a list of things for ...
