Lakers, Heat surging in series through defensive superiority

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 00:58:46 GMT

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — The NBA just completed its highest-scoring regular season in 53 years, its teams scoring 282,127 points while a record 20 players made at least 200 3-pointers.And now two low-seeded playoff teams are surging toward the conference finals with dominant defense. The Lakers and the Heat are widely considered to be two of the best defensive teams in a league that has rarely been more offense-oriented, and both veteran-led groups turned in sterling defensive performances to take 2-1 series leads in the second round.Miami hosts the Knicks and Los Angeles hosts the Warriors on Monday night with a chance to seize control of both series largely because they’ve been better defensively.“We’re playing the way we envisioned the Lakers to play,” LeBron James said. “No matter what goes on, we hang our hats on our defense.”Eighth-seeded Miami held New York to 86 points while winning Game 3 on Saturday, and the seventh-seeded Lakers held Golden State under 100 points fo...

Analysis: Wemby’s farewell tour will be a French celebration

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 00:58:46 GMT

Victor Wembanyama’s first basket on Sunday night looked so easy. He deflected a pass, ran it down, dribbled twice and dunked the ball with his left hand. And 15,000 people — about four or five times the size of the usual crowd at his home games — roared. He’s called a generational talent, though really, there’s never been one in France quite like Wembanyama. The 7-foot-3, 19-year-old, soon-to-be No. 1 pick in the NBA draft is on his farewell tour of his homeland, playing his final pro games there before he comes to North America and accepts the challenge of trying to truly become the game’s next superstar. His final numbers for Boulogne-Levallois in its 93-82 win over Bourg-en-Bresse on Sunday: 25 points, 10 rebounds, four assists.A fine night, for certain, but nothing that’s out of the ordinary for this extraordinary kid. He’s that good, he’s proven it every time he takes the floor — and as the enormous hype surrounding his move to the NBA continues to grow, he’s showing no sign...

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Max Verstappen used an easy Sunday drive to keep Red Bull undefeated on the season, as the reigning two-time Formula One champion drove from ninth to the victory at the Miami Grand Prix. Verstappen has three wins this season, while Perez, the pole sitter in Miami, has two. The win was the 38th of his career for Verstappen, who tied Sebastian Vettel for most victories for Red Bull. At this pace, he’ll smash Vettel’s record by the end of what many critics are already complaining is a boring Red Bull-dominated season. “I call that simply (expletive) lovely,” Verstappen said on his radio. “That was a good race, a good race all around, so thank you very much. That was really, really good, also good for the team, again” Red Bull boss Christian Horner praised Verstappen’s poise over ...

Overall the weekend turned out to be a nice one for us!The start of the work week promises more quiet time and lots of sunshine for South Florida. An area of high-pressure will dominate our weather pattern through the next couple of days, which should leave tranquil weather conditions across South Florida. And while Monday starts off breezy at times, wind speeds should continue to die down as the week goes on. Afternoon high temperatures on Monday will be similar...
