An investigation got underway Thursday after what officials said was an “apparent homicide” in the parking lot of a hotel in Marlboro. Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan and Marlboro Chief of Police David Giorgi said police responded to the hotel, a Holiday Inn off Route 20 near I-495, around 12:30 p.m. Officials said the woman who died was an adult female. A suspect was taken into custody, according to the DA and the police chief, and officials said there is no threat to the public. SKY7-HD was over the scene Thursday afternoon, showing crews working around the hotel with crime tape in place. On the ground, homicide detectives appeared to be focusing on a pickup truck in the parking lot. Investigators could be seen looking for evidence, blocking off most of the area including a wooded area on the edge of the property. The pickup truck was later removed from the lot and investigators had cleared the scene Thursday night.Marlborough Assistant Fire...Emergency crews respond after fiery truck crash in Lynn

The Winter Hill Community Innovation School in Somerville will be closed Friday after a small section of concrete fell into a stairwell inside the building, school and city officials said. Officials said the concrete fell outside school operating hours, while the school was unoccupied. The stairwell was later closed to students and staff while a structural engineer was brought in and while city Department of Public Works staff responded, according to officials. Officials said DPW crews had “conducted minor repairs” and had been monitoring the building’s interior as of Thursday night. The planned closure on Friday now comes “out of an abundance of caution,” according to officials, to let engineers “conduct a more thorough review of the building.”In a message signed by Somerville’s Interim Superintendent of Schools Jeff Curley, Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and school principal Courtney Gosselin, officials said they are working on a plan to temporarily relocate classroo...Thursday’s high school roundup/scores: Grand slam powers Braintree past Everett

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is nothing if not a political survivor.Underestimated from the start, the Republican who cruised around his California hometown of Bakersfield and stumbled into a career in Congress was never taken too seriously by the Washington establishment. With overwhelming House passage of the debt ceiling and budget deal he negotiated with President Joe Biden, the emergent speaker proved the naysayers and eye-rollers otherwise. A relentless force, he pushed a reluctant White House to the negotiating table and delivered the votes from his balky House GOP majority to seal the deal.“You still ask the same questions each week: Do you think you can pass the bill this week. Do you think you will still be speaker next week,” McCarthy chided reporters after Wednesday’s late-night vote.“Keep underestimating us,” he said, “and we’ll keep proving to the American public that we’ve never given up.”The Senate passed the bill Thursday night, se...Tropical Storm Mawar brings heavy rains, landslide risk to Japan’s southern islands as it passes by
