My heartfelt condolences to his family.Gary Richards was a good gentleman who took efforts to answer almost every message or letter he received. This dates to mid-2002 when I was residing in Cupertino and would travel on Lawrence Expressway every day to my work. I had noticed the 280 North and South entry signs on Lawrence Expressway were incorrect and had written a short note to Gary Richards. He was such a gracious person — he responded to it in the newspaper and got the sign boards corrected.Gary Richards responded positively. That’s what I appreciate. He was liked and loved by all. It is sad to see him go. May his soul be at peace.Prakash VenkatakrishnaBangalore, IndiaGratitude for Richards’...

Nearly 90 percent of the territory’s residents have been displaced, and it has been called “one of this century’s most destructive wars.”So how much have I chipped in to create this hell on earth? The best answer I’ve come up with is $150.There are two ways of looking at this number. One is that this is a relatively small amount of money. Another is that the U.S. is so astonishingly rich and powerful that we as a country can mete out overwhelming b...

There was no festive cheer for north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham on Thursday.A 2-0 home loss to West Ham stopped Arsenal moving back to the top of the Premier League.A 4-2 defeat at Brighton prevented Tottenham moving back into the top four.Arsenal’s setback was more surprising, given it was the team’s first loss at home in any competition in seven months. And it’s just one win in its last four league games for the Gunners, at a time when Manchester City — the defending champion — has been looking vulnerable with just one win in six before a come-from-behind victory at Everton on Wednesday. In truth, Arsenal — despite having 30 shots — never looked like getting the better of West Ham once the visitors went ahead through a goal that was less conclusive than the final score.Cameras did not show definitively whether the ball was out of play when Jarrod Bowen turned it back into the penalty area for Tomas Soucek to force home a finish in the 13th minute.
